Heard someone say moss is just lazy grass, got me thinking

I was at the farmer's market in Portland last Saturday and this older guy was selling these little terrarium kits. He says to another customer, "Moss is just grass that gave up trying." I laughed but then I kept thinking about it all day. I have this shady corner in my backyard where nothing grows, not even weeds. I always fought it, tried seeding it twice with different grass mixes, spent maybe $60 total. Then I remembered what he said and I just let it go. Now I'm actually thinking about encouraging the moss that's already there, maybe adding some more from the woods nearby. Anyone else stop fighting their shady spots and just lean into the moss? Did you do anything special to get it to spread or did it just do its own thing once you stopped messing with it?
