I finally got my fiddle leaf fig to branch after 2 years of pinching, because I stopped believing the 'just cut the top' advice
Everyone on here says to chop the top of a fiddle leaf to force branching, but when I tried that on my 4 foot plant in March 2023, it just grew one sad side shoot and stalled for 8 months. I did some digging and found out the plant needs a ton of light and a steady temp to push multiple buds, so I moved it 2 feet from my south window in Denver and started pinching just the newest leaf every 3 weeks instead of a hard cut. It took 14 months total, but I finally got 3 branches this spring. I know hard pruning works for some people, but for a single stem in low light it just stresses the plant out. Has anyone else had better luck with notching instead of cutting?
That part about pinching the newest leaf every 3 weeks really hit home for me. I did the same thing with my rubber plant after a hard chop left it sulking for months, and the slow and steady approach got me two new shoots without all the drama. In my experience light is the real key here, because no amount of cutting makes up for a dark corner.
