My sad pothos went from 4 yellow leaves to 22 new ones in 5 weeks, and all I changed was the water
I have a golden pothos on my desk that limped along for about two years. Yellow leaves kept showing up, maybe one a week, and I figured that was just how it goes. Then a friend at the community garden in Tacoma told me my tap water was the problem, since ours is hard and treated. I started filling a jug and letting it sit out on the counter for a full day before watering. Five weeks later I counted 22 new leaves and zero yellow ones. Same pot, same window, same soil, nothing else changed. Has anyone else dealt with hard water hurting their houseplants, and does letting it sit actually do enough or should I just buy distilled?
Man, hard water is sneaky because the chlorine and salts build up in the soil over time, so the sitting out part fixes the chlorine but not the minerals. You might actually be seeing the break from chlorine more than the hardness itself.
