Rant: a guy at the Austin cactus show called my soil mix "soup" and he was not wrong
I have been growing succulents for about 4 years and always used the same bagged mix straight out of the bag because it felt easier. Back in March I brought three of my haworthias to a small cactus and succulent swap at a plant shop off South Lamar in Austin, mostly just to trade cuttings. An older guy running one of the tables picked up my pot, poked a finger in the soil, and said "this is soup, your roots are drowning and you don't even know it." I got kind of annoyed at first but he pulled his own haworthia out and showed me how the mix basically fell apart in his hand, tons of pumice and grit, almost no dark wet stuff. So I went home and repotted everything in about a 50/50 blend of potting soil and pumice, plus a little coarse sand, and started bottom watering only when the pots felt light. Six weeks later two of the haworthias that had been sitting there doing nothing pushed out new pups for the first time. The weird part is the plant that struggled the most before is now the happiest, which makes zero sense to me. Anyone else get called out on their mix by a stranger and actually change it, or did you just nod and keep doing your thing?
