Rant: That $140 hybrid orchid mix that rotted in 3 weeks

Bought a fancy sphagnum+perlite blend from a shop in Portland last month and my phal roots turned to mush before I even got the chance to water it wrong, has anyone else had better luck mixing their own bark ratios instead of trusting those premade bags?
