Seed starter mix vs. potting soil, my 3 week test in Austin

I ran a little experiment last month with two trays of tomato seeds. One got the fancy seed starter mix from the nursery, the other got regular potting soil I already had. The seed starter had like 80% germination in 9 days, while the potting soil took 14 and only half came up. Has anyone else found the extra cost worth it, or is there a cheap DIY mix that works just as well?

Wait, half your seeds just didn't come up? That's a huge difference.
