Showerthought: I dropped $200 on a philodendron that was already dying and I want to warn you
I bought a ring of fire philodendron from a local shop in Portland for $200. The shop owner said it was just stressed from shipping. Two weeks later every leaf turned yellow and dropped off. I tried everything, new soil, more light, less water, nothing worked. I pulled it out and the roots were totally mushy and smelled like rot. The shop won't refund me because it's been over a month. Has anyone else been sold a plant that was already doomed? How do you check before you pay?
Pulling it out and finding mushy roots is the worst, my buddy went through the same thing with a monstera and the shop told him it was just "adjusting" too. He checks the soil and squeezes the base of the stem now before buying anything, if it's squishy or smells weird he walks.
