Why does everyone insist that pothos need bright indirect light to thrive?

I have kept a golden pothos in a north facing bathroom in Seattle with one tiny frosted window for 2 years and it has grown 6 feet of vine, so I think the whole 'bright indirect light' rule people repeat online is way overstated for this plant.
