Had to choose between a 4.5 inch and a 6 inch brick for a garden wall rebuild in Burlington. Went with the 6 inch and it's holding up way better against the freeze-thaw cycles.

My old garden wall used the 4.5 inch brick.

Oh wow, this is actually super helpful. I always figured the thinner brick was fine to save a bit of cash. Seeing it laid out like that for Burlington weather makes total sense. The extra cost for the 6 inch is totally worth it if it doesn't crack after one winter. You just changed my whole plan for my own project.

jessica397 nailed it. I actually read a local contractor's blog post about this exact thing for Burlington winters. He said the 6 inch bricks handle the expansion and contraction way better because they have more mass to absorb the moisture and freeze cycles. The 4.5 inch ones he mentioned had a real problem with flaking after just two seasons. Saw some photos of his rebuilds and the difference was night and day. Glad you went with the bigger brick, sounds like you saved yourself a headache a few years down the road.
