Heard a foreman on a job in Dayton say "blocks are blocks, it's the guys stacking them that matter" and it's been bugging me all week
I was on a commercial job over on the west side of Dayton finishing up a wall when I caught the general contractor talking to one of his guys. He pointed at a pallet of CMUs and said "blocks are blocks, it's the guys stacking them that matter." At first I nodded along because sure, skill matters. But the more I chewed on it, the more it rubbed me wrong. I've been laying block for 22 years and I can tell you right now that a batch of units that got rained on at the yard, or ones that came in a quarter inch out of spec, will fight you all day no matter how good your hands are. I've had walls where I burned half a day just shimming and tapping to keep the courses true because the block itself was junk. The guy saying it was standing there in clean boots holding a tablet, so I don't think he's laid a course since the 90s. It feels like the same thing as telling a cook that the ingredients don't matter. Anyway, I'm curious if other folks have run into this attitude, or if I'm just being touchy about a throwaway comment.
