Hot take: That old timer told me to soak my bricks before laying them, I thought he was full of it

I figured modern bricks are made different and skipped soaking on a big wall last summer in Austin. Four months later three of them cracked right along the face, never had that issue before. Any of you guys still do the soak or am I just unlucky?

Honestly, I used to skip it too but after you said that I'm soaking every brick from now on.

You said "I'm soaking every brick from now on" - does that mean you actually saw cracks show up on a wall you did without soaking? I had a guy tell me once the soak helps with the mortar bond more than keeping the brick from cracking, but I'm curious which one you think made the difference. Just trying to figure out if I got lucky with the uncracked ones on that Austin wall or if I should be buying a hose setup.
