Leveling mortar with a chalk line finally clicked for me

Been laying block on a 40 foot foundation in Cleveland and kept getting low spots that took forever to fix. I tried snapping a chalk line across the top course and pulling the mud to that mark instead of eyeballing it. Cut my leveling time down to about 20 minutes per row. Anyone else use a string line for top course work, or is that just me being lazy?
