Showerthought: I used to mix my mortar in a wheelbarrow with a shovel for every job.

After a big patio job in Tempe last summer where my back was killing me by day three, I finally bought a small electric mixer for about $400. Now I can't imagine going back to doing it by hand, but I'm curious if anyone else made that switch and what brand they went with.

Man yeah that's just how it goes with everything though. Seems like we all gotta hurt bad enough once before finally admitting there's a better way to do things.

Watched a buddy of mine mix concrete for a shed base by hand last fall. He swore the old way built character, but he was walking like a question mark for a week. He texted me a link to a mixer the very next day.

My uncle always said mixing by hand was a young man's game and he was right. Read an article about how rental places can't keep mixers in stock on spring weekends because everyone learns the hard way. Your buddy @thompson.brian is living proof that character building has its limits, usually right at the lower back. Sometimes the old way is just the hard way.

Ha! The old "character building" argument - right up until your back files for divorce.
