The old mason in Wichita who made me tear down 3 courses because of one crooked joint
Back in 2019 I was on a garage job in Wichita and an old mason named Ray was watching me lay block. He walked over, pointed at a head joint about halfway up the third course, and said 'that one's fat, take her down.' I tried to argue it was close enough and he just stood there. Ended up pulling 3 courses and redoing them, which cost me about 2 hours on a Friday. The thing is he was right, that joint was pushing the whole wall out of plumb and I never would have caught it until the top. He told me later that a fat joint now is a leaning wall later, and I still hear it in my head every time I pick up the trowel. How do you all handle it when someone calls out your work on a job, do you push back or just tear it down?
