Used to mix mortar by eye in a wheelbarrow, now I use a paddle mixer and a scale
Back when I was helping my uncle on a garage in Gary, Indiana around 2009, I mixed everything by eye in a wheelbarrow with a hoe, and half my batches were either soup or dry crumbles. Last month I finally got a paddle mixer and a $30 kitchen scale, and I weigh the sand and cement out at 3 to 1 for a joint mix and it comes out the same every single time. The funny part is my uncle watched me do it and called it fancy nonsense, then asked me to mix his next batch the same way. Now I keep the scale in my truck even on small repair jobs. Anyone else weigh their mixes, or am I the only one who went soft?
