A guy at the hardware store tried to sell me a $40 'gourmet' rice cooker for my kitchen
He was real pushy about it, saying cheap food needed fancy tools. I told him my $10 pot from Goodwill has made rice for years. Happened in the aisle at Ace on Main Street. He just shook his head. Anyone else get weird advice about needing expensive gear to cook cheap?

Oh man, that is exactly the kind of stuff that drives me nuts! I had some guy at a kitchen store try to sell me a fifty dollar garlic press once, telling me my old one was ruining my cooking. I told him I've been smashing cloves with the flat side of a knife for twenty years and my garlic comes out just fine. He got all huffy and walked away. I think people who hock that expensive gear just want you to feel like you're missing something. A hunk of metal and some elbow grease has never let me down. Spend your money on better ingredients, not on fancy gadgets that just make you feel fancy.

Ever try that guy's rice? Bet it's just as mushy as mine. My cheap pot works fine, you just gotta watch the heat.

My buddy Dave bought one of those expensive rice cookers last year, the fancy Japanese kind. He was so proud of it, showed it off like a new car. Thing is, he still messes up the water ratio every single time. Last week he made a batch that was basically glue. We had to order pizza. His old ten dollar pot from college never failed him like that.
