Changed my bean buying habits after an eye opener

I used to grab any cheap canned beans for my meals without a second thought. Then I saw a report on how some brands have really bad labor practices. Now I check labels and pay a little more for ethical ones, even on my tight budget.

Labels are mostly marketing anyway.

Can I admit my first step into ethical shopping was just staring at the bean shelf in total confusion? I felt like I needed a detective's license to figure it out, and I'm pretty sure I picked the "fair trade" option that was just fancy packaging over normal beans once. I get what hugo441 means about labels being marketing, it's a real minefield. But for me, trying to do a little better, even if I mess it up sometimes, feels worth the extra few cents.
