Just found out my $5 bag of lentils makes 8 servings

I was tired of dropping $12 on a single pack of chicken breasts, so I grabbed a bag of green lentils from the bulk bin at WinCo. Cooked them up with some carrots and onions I had lying around, and it filled my biggest pot. I got 8 solid servings out of it for pocket change. Anyone else got a cheap staple that took them by surprise?

Tbh I get what caseyclark is saying but I have to gently push back on "lentil people" being a thing. I think the real surprise here isn't that lentils are some magical superfood, it's that we've been conditioned to think cheap food can't be good. Like yeah, my first batch of lentils was bland and sad because I didn't season them right. Once I started treating them like any other protein - adding garlic, bay leaves, a splash of vinegar at the end - they actually tasted good. The math just works out way better than meat when you're broke.
