My grandma used to make soup from literally just bones and scrap veggies, now I buy premade broth like a chump
I was thinking about this the other day when I was cleaning out my fridge. I had a bag of carrot peels, onion skins, and celery ends that I was about to toss, just like I always do. My grandma would have had a fit. She grew up during the Depression and saved everything. She'd take chicken bones from Sunday dinner, throw them in a pot with whatever veggie scraps she had, simmer it all day, and we'd have soup for like 3 days. I'm over here spending $4 on a carton of broth when I could be doing what she did. It's not even about the money really, it's just the principle of it. When did I get so lazy? Now I'm trying to do a bone broth Sunday this weekend to see if I can get back to it. Anybody else have a old family trick like that?

My mom would save bacon grease in a coffee can on the stove and use it for everything, I felt so fancy buying cooking oil for years. Now I'm the weirdo with a grease jar in my fridge and a freezer bag of veggie scraps for broth day. We're all just turning into our grandparents one slow step at a time.

Freeze your bacon grease in ice cube trays for easy portioning later.
