My sister-in-law in Dayton said her family eats on $47 a week and I almost called BS
She pulled out her receipt binder at Thanksgiving and showed me every trip since March. Turns out she plans 5 dinners around whatever meat is marked down at Kroger on Sunday, then builds the sides from rice, cabbage, and frozen veg. I was spending $130 a week for just me and my husband, so I sat down and copied her system for 3 weeks and saved $190. What's the one cheap dinner your family keeps going back to when money is tight?
Wait, she keeps a receipt binder? That is some next level stuff right there. I can barely keep track of my grocery list, let alone every trip since March. The meat markdown thing makes sense though, Sunday is usually when our store slaps the stickers on. My cheap go to is a big pot of pinto beans with cornbread, costs maybe four bucks and feeds us two nights. My wife throws in whatever leftover meat we have and it never tastes the same twice.
