My slow cooker lid shattered while I was making chili last Tuesday
I had a big pot of chili going for Tuesday dinner, trying to stretch a pound of ground beef into a week of meals. Around 4 PM I heard this loud crack and looked over to see the glass lid on my old slow cooker just split right down the middle. It was a cheap one I got at a yard sale for 5 bucks a couple years ago, so I guess it had a hairline crack I never noticed. I had to scramble to transfer everything into a big pot on the stove and finish cooking it that way. The chili actually turned out fine, but now I need to figure out if I should buy a new slow cooker or just keep using pots. Anyone else had a kitchen gadget break at the worst possible time?

My husband stood there yelling at the glass" lol that's hilarious because my buddy Steve did the same thing when his rice cooker blew up.

Oh honey, I have BEEN there. That exact same thing happened to me with a chili pot a few years back, except mine shattered while I was at work and my husband had to deal with the mess. He didn't even know what to do, just stood there yelling at the glass. First thing, do NOT buy another cheap slow cooker from a yard sale or Walmart. They're made with thinner glass these days and it's just asking for trouble. I'd honestly recommend getting a used one from a thrift store but one of the older models with the thick ceramic insert, those things are built like tanks. Or if you don't want to risk it again, just use a good heavy-bottomed pot on the stove with a tight lid and cook low and slow in the oven. That's what we do now for chili and stews, and it tastes just as good without the glass exploding on you.
