Shoutout to the can of beans that made me rethink my whole grocery budget

I was at Aldi last Tuesday buying my usual stuff and grabbed a can of their brand black beans for 79 cents. Got home and realized I had been buying the name brand version at the regular grocery store for $1.89 because I thought it was better quality. I made chili with those cheap beans and honestly could not taste a single difference. It hit me that I had been throwing away over a dollar per can for years without even thinking about it. Now I check every staple I buy to see if the store brand is just as good. Has anyone else found a specific item where the cheap version surprised you?

Tbh I was exactly like you until I did a blind taste test with my wife and picked the store brand every time. Honestly it made me realize I'd been paying for marketing not quality.

Wait, did you actually cook both cans side by side in the same recipe with the same seasoning to really compare? Ngl I tried that exact same swap with Aldi beans and my chili came out way mushier and less flavorful. Tbh I think there's a real difference with canned beans - the name brands usually have less salt and a firmer texture that holds up better in cooking. I'm all for saving money where it makes sense but some things just aren't worth the gamble. Honest opinion, the 79 cent beans always taste like they were sitting in a hot warehouse too long.
