Switched from ground beef to lentils in my tacos and saved $4 a meal

I used to buy 80/20 ground beef for taco night every week. A pound costs around $5.50 near me in Austin. Last month I tried using brown lentils instead. A bag costs $1.50 and makes about the same amount of filling. Cook them with taco seasoning and some broth and you barely notice the swap. Has anyone else tried stretching meat with beans or lentils for savings?

My sister in Dallas started doing half and half with canned black beans and it stretches even further than lentils alone. She says the texture stays closer to ground meat that way, from what she told me. Might be worth trying if you want to ease into it.
