The lentils won, but now I'm fighting the soak time

Last Tuesday I stood in the grocery store for five minutes holding a can of chili and a bag of dried lentils. The can was easier, sure, but the bag was half the price and the package said it makes like six servings. I took the lentils home and spent an hour simmering them with a cheap onion and some cumin I found in the back of the cupboard. It came out decent, not great, but I froze three containers for later. Then I looked at the chili can again this week and realized I could buy four bags of lentils for the same money and just season them differently each time. Has anyone else made the switch to dried beans and actually stuck with it, or did you go back to cans after the first batch? The soaking time is the only thing that bugs me.

Soaking isn't even required, just simmer them longer and they turn out fine.
