Thought dried beans were a rip off until I did the math on a 2 dollar bag
I always figured dried beans were one of those things people brag about but never actually do, mostly cause the soaking and the long cook time sounded like way too much work for me. Then money got tight back in March and I grabbed a 2 dollar bag of pinto beans at the grocery on 3rd just to stretch a few dinners, and that one bag gave me six solid meals, which works out to like 33 cents a serving. Soaked them overnight, threw them in the slow cooker with onion, garlic, and a spoon of bacon grease, and they came out better than the canned stuff I used to pay 1.29 a can for. I did mess up the first batch by adding salt too early and they stayed kinda tough, but once I fixed that it was smooth sailing. Now I keep two or three bags in the pantry and make a big pot every Sunday, then eat on it all week with rice or in tacos. What I want to know is if anyone has a trick for keeping them from getting mushy after day three, cause mine start falling apart by Wednesday.
