Used to dump a whole jar of pasta sauce on noodles. Now I stretch it.
About 6 months ago I realized I was blowing through $4 jars of sauce in one meal. For two people. That's like $2 per serving just on sauce. So I started buying cheap tomato paste and cans of crushed tomatoes instead. A $1.50 can of crushed tomatoes plus some garlic and dried basil makes way more sauce for way less. Now I get 3 meals out of what used to be one. Seriously, has anyone else figured out a way to make jarred sauce last longer?

My husband used to buy two jars of Classico every week. I told him we were bleeding money on tomato water basically. But then I tried his trick with the tomato paste and canned tomatoes and garlic. He was right. I was wrong. Now I stretch one can into spaghetti and then make a smaller pizza sauce batch later in the week.

Knew a friend who swore by Rao's for years until she realized she was basically paying $9 for a jar of sauce she could make better with a $1 can of San Marzanos and some onion butter. She told me she felt like such a fool when she finally tried it. @lindahunt I get what your husband was onto though, that tomato paste trick is a game changer for depth. She now does exactly what you do, one batch of sauce for pasta night then uses the leftover to do a quick pizza later. It's wild how much money and fridge space you free up when you stop buying the jarred stuff.
