Flight went sideways in Vegas when my carry-on got gate checked and my meds were inside
I always preach packing essentials in your personal bag but broke my own rule last month at McCarran, and after the airline lost my bag for 3 days it got me wondering - do we all learn the hard way once or is there a strategy that actually forces you to follow your own advice?

Have you seen that study about how our brains just don't learn from other people's mistakes, only from our own painful experiences? I read it in a travel blog a while back, and it basically explains why we all have to lose our luggage at least once before we keep our meds in our pocket.

The one time I left my phone charger at a hotel in Chicago back in 2019 taught me to always pack it in my carry-on no matter what. It's like your brain needs that specific sting of regret to actually remember anything important. I see it all the time with my friends who keep dating the same type of person even after watching their buddy get totally wrecked by someone like that. Everyone thinks they're different until they're the one sitting there going "how did I end up here again?" It's the same reason people keep buying brand new cars that lose half their value in two years instead of listening to their dad who already did that twice. Pain just hits different when its your own wallet or your own heart on the line.
