Hostel kitchen gamble 2 am pasta night backfired hard

I tried cooking a cheap pasta dinner in a Lisbon hostel kitchen at 2 am to save on eating out, but the stove was so slow it took 40 minutes and I woke up two people who gave me the death stare. Learned that hostel kitchens are a total lottery, the one in Porto had a burner that boiled water in 5 minutes flat. Anyone else got tips for spotting a decent hostel kitchen before booking, or should I just stick to street food for the same cash?
