Hostel worker in Lisbon said I was overpacking toiletries
I spent 2 weeks carrying a full-size shampoo and 3 different conditioners through Portugal before a guy at my hostel in Lisbon pointed out I could just buy travel sizes there for like 2 euros. It freed up so much room in my bag that I could actually fit souvenirs on the way back. Anyone else just ditch the big bottles and hit up a local pharmacy when they land?

I read this travel hacking blog once that said you can save a whole kilo in your bag just by switching to hotel shampoo bars instead of liquids. That guy was right, you probably saved yourself a headache carrying that stuff around.

yeah I gotta say I see it kind of different honestly. those hotel shampoo bars can be hit or miss and sometimes they leave my hair feeling weird or super dry depending on the water quality where I'm at. plus I've had a few melt into a gross mess in my dopp kit when it got warm on a trip, not worth the hassle for me. I'd rather just bring a small liquid bottle that I know works with my hair type and not gamble on whatever random bar the hotel has. also sometimes the hotel bars smell super strong like perfume or something, gives me a headache. I get the weight savings thing but for me comfort and predictability wins out over a few ounces every time.
