Hotel breakfast vs bakery run, the math surprised me in Lisbon

I booked a place without breakfast for $58 a night in Lisbon and figured a pastel de nata and coffee from a corner bakery would run me $4 a day. Instead I spent $9 every morning because I kept grabbing extra snacks for the day, which ate into my savings. Do you guys budget for food when picking a hotel or just wing it on the streets?

Yeah but you're comparing apples to oranges there. That $9 includes snacks for later, which you'd buy anyway even if the hotel had breakfast. I'd rather pay $58 without breakfast and grab what I actually want each day, not be locked into some overpriced hotel buffet that's the same boring stuff every morning.
