I used to book hotels through those big discount sites until I got stranded in Portland

Last September I landed in Portland at 11 PM and my reservation through a third party site just vanished. The hotel had no record of it and I was out $180 with nowhere to go. Now I always book directly with the hotel and use price matching instead. Has anyone else had a booking disappear like that on a third party site?

My friend had the exact same thing happen in Chicago, $250 booking just gone when she got to the front desk at midnight. She swore off those sites after that and I learned from watching her, now I always call the hotel direct.
