Is skipping travel insurance really worth the $80 risk?
I spent 4 hours on hold with a budget airline last week after a missed connection in Denver, and it made me wonder if people actually save money by skipping insurance or just get lucky. My last two trips I skipped it and came out ahead, but that one hour delay cost me a night in a hotel. What's your breaking point where the hassle stops being worth the savings?

honestly people act like missing a flight is a life or death situation, but its just a few hours of your day. you either pay $200 for a hotel or eat the cost once every few years and still come out ahead. plus most credit cards already have some basic coverage if you bothered to read the fine print.

The $200 hotel thing is what gets me. I missed a connection in Denver last winter and the airline handed me a voucher for a hotel that was still $140 out of pocket after taxes. Plus I had to eat airport food because everything closed by the time I got there. That's not "a few hours," that's a whole day gone and my wallet lighter. And the credit card coverage thing, good luck getting them to actually pay out. I tried once for a delayed bag and the paperwork took three weeks. People act like the fine print magically fixes everything, but it's a maze.
