Met a guy at a hostel in Prague who showed me how to eat for $5 a day
I was in Prague last summer and ran into this older traveler at a hostel who had been on the road for 6 months. He told me he never eats at restaurants, just hits local markets and bakeries for bread, cheese, and fruit. One day he took me to a market near the old town and bought a whole bag of stuff for like $4. He said buying from street vendors at closing time gets you half price deals. I tried it the next day and got a huge meal for $3.50. Anyone else found locals in other countries who taught them tricks like that?

Markets at closing time are a cheat code for sure. Street vendors just want to unload their stuff before they pack up. Your mileage may vary but it's saved me a ton in places like Thailand and Mexico.

oh for real, closing time is where the real deals are at! i was in bangkok last year and snagged a massive bag of mango sticky rice for like 50 baht right as the guy was packing up. same thing happened in a small town in vietnam, the lady practically gave me a whole plate of banh mi because she didn't want to haul it back home. it's wild how much they drop prices just to clear stuff out. gotta love that hustle though, works out for everyone in the end.
