My $60 "universal" travel adapter fried my phone charger in a hotel in Prague

Bruh that "universal" trap got me too. My $50 one from Amazon zapped my laptop brick in Berlin last year. First thing is stop using that adapter immediately, it's probably not handling the voltage properly even if it says it's rated for it. You gotta check the actual voltage rating on the adapter itself, not just the plug part. Also try plugging your phone charger into a different outlet in the room with a different device first to see if it's the hotel wiring or just the adapter. If it really fried your charger, you might need to get a new one with a built-in surge protector next time. Honestly for Prague you're better off just buying a local euro plug charger at a electronics store there, way less headache.

My old travel adapter from 2019 caught fire in a hostel in Budapest. Not like a big fire just some smoke and a weird burning plastic smell at 2am. I woke up thinking someone was cooking bacon in the common room. Turned out the adapter was melting into the wall socket. Had to buy a new phone charger plus a proper converter at a tiny electronics shop near the metro station. The guy behind the counter just laughed and handed me a heavy black adapter that looked like it could survive a bomb blast. Still use that thing 4 years later.
