People keep saying hostels are the cheapest way to sleep. They're not.

Booked a hostel in Prague for $25 a night last fall. After three nights, I added up the locker fee, the towel rental, and the overpriced breakfast I bought because there was no kitchen. A local guesthouse was $30 flat with a private room and free coffee. The math just works out better if you look past the advertised bed price. Anyone found a better deal outside the hostel scene?

Yeah, I was all about hostels for years. Then I got hit with a bunch of those extra fees in Lisbon and the total was a joke. Started looking at cheap guesthouses and family-run places instead. You often get your own space for basically the same money once you add everything up. That hostel math really falls apart when you need a towel and a locker just to feel safe.

Forget the fees, the real cost is your TIME. You end up waiting for showers or hunting for outlets while a place like @roberts.aaron mentioned just lets you live. That constant low-grade stress from sharing a room with 12 people has its own price tag.
