Pro tip: stop booking the 'cheapest' flight and check the red-eye math
Last month I snagged a $38 flight from Phoenix to Portland on Spirit, but I landed at 1am and spent $29 on a shuttle because no bus ran that late. Then the hotel wouldn't let me check in until 4pm, so I ate a $14 airport breakfast just to have somewhere to sit. I started adding up the extra costs for every 'deal' I've taken over 2 years and it's easily $400 in wasted time and fees. The trick now is I compare total cost per awake hour, not just the ticket price. Has anyone else figured out a better way to factor in those red-eye catches?
