PSA: The hostel guy in Lisbon got me with a 'free' walking tour that cost me $42
Booked a cheap hostel in Lisbon for 18 euros a night and the front desk guy, Tomas, kept pushing this 'free' walking tour that met in the lobby every morning. Turned out the guide walked us 3 miles to a restaurant where the menu had no prices and we all felt too awkward to leave, so I paid 40 bucks for a plate of sardines plus tip. Now I always ask straight up if there's a paid stop before I sign up for anything labeled free. Has anyone found a way to tell which 'free' tours are actually free?

Free walking tour" usually means tip only, no paid stop.
