Serious question, has anyone else tried to get a refund on a non-refundable hostel booking in Berlin?

I spent 4 hours on hold and sent 12 emails over three days before they finally gave me a credit for a future stay, not cash back, so what's your best trick for actually getting money back on a booking you can't use?

Try a chargeback if your travel dates changed due to a major event.

Actually, check the fine print on your card's chargeback rules first. Some companies have gotten really strict about what counts as a "major event." A friend got denied because the airline offered a future credit, even though the new dates didn't work at all. It's worth a shot, but maybe gather all your proof before you call.
