That one week I spent $12 a day eating street food in Mexico City
Last March I was in Mexico City for a week and managed to eat three full meals a day for under $12 total - tacos al pastor, tlacoyos, and fresh fruit cups from the stalls near the Zocalo. The trick was skipping sit-down restaurants entirely and sticking to the busy corners where locals lined up, which is how I found a tamale vendor who sold two for 15 pesos. Has anyone else had good luck eating cheap by just following the crowds in a new city?

Those $12 days sound great until you spend the next two nights on a toilet regretting that tamale vendor.

That whole "just follow the locals" thing is a coin flip. Half the time you get the best al pastor of your life, the other half you're learning a lot about the city's plumbing system. I'm not saying it's not a good deal but I've seen those tamale setups. They're often sitting in a cooler that's been sweating in the sun all morning. Fifteen pesos is suspiciously cheap for a reason.
