The $14 night bus that beat a $90 hotel room
Honestly, I used to think night buses were a last resort for broke students, but that changed during a 3 day trip to Lisbon. I booked a 11 PM bus from Porto for $14 and got a full row to myself, slept better than I do in most hostels, and woke up right in the city center. Meanwhile, my friend paid $90 for a hotel bed and spent half the night listening to traffic outside. The trick was picking a bus that leaves after 10 PM, so fewer stops and less chance of a packed cabin. I know everyone swears by sleeper trains or early flights, but for short hops under 6 hours, this beat both on cost and actual rest. Has anyone else had a surprisingly good night on a budget bus, or did I just get lucky with the empty row?
