The museum pass trick that saved me 60 bucks in Chicago

I was about to pay full price at the Field Museum until a local told me to check the library for free passes, and they had them for the whole weekend. Why did it take me 3 trips to the city to figure this out, is this common knowledge or did I just get lucky?
