The time I chose a hostel over a hotel in Barcelona and it actually worked out
I was debating between a 40 euro hostel bunk and a 90 euro hotel room near La Rambla. Picked the hostel, met a guy who showed me a secret rooftop bar with 3 euro beers and nobody there. Has anyone else found that hostels give you better local tips than any guidebook?

Found a spot in Gracia that did 2.50 euro cañas back in 2019. @benb21 you gotta watch for the tourist traps selling that 3 euro stuff warm though, I got burned once at a place near the Ramblas. Stick to the bars with old guys smoking inside, that's where the real cheap beer lives.
