Tried hostel dorms vs budget hotels across 4 cities in Spain and the winner surprised me

I just got back from a 10 day trip hitting Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Granada. I usually book the cheapest hostel bed I can find, but this time I tried one of those Ibis budget hotels in Seville for about $45 a night. The private room and bathroom, plus having a place to lock my bag, totally changed my travel groove. I saved maybe $10 a night in the dorms but lost sleep and had to watch my stuff constantly. Anyone else find that paying a little more for a private room actually makes the trip feel longer and less stressful?

Had a buddy try the same thing in Barcelona and he said paying that extra $10 saved his whole trip because he actually slept through the night for once. Ended up switching to private rooms for the rest of his travels after that.
