Vent: I stopped booking flights months ahead and it's saving me real money
Everyone in this community says book early or you're throwing cash away, and I did that for 4 years. I'd set fare alerts in January for a June trip to Austin and feel smug about my $310 round trip. Then last spring I got stuck when a work thing moved and I had to rebook 3 weeks out. The new flight cost $270, less than what I paid half a year early. So I ran a little test. For my last 6 trips I booked between 14 and 21 days out and my average came to $245. Same routes, same airlines, nothing fancy. The catch is you need a flexible schedule and you can't be picky about departure times. It works for me because I travel alone and don't care if I land at 11pm. Has anyone else ditched the book early rule, or am I just getting lucky with the routes I fly?
