A friend pointed out my 'fun money' was just a leaky bucket
For years, I had a simple budget rule: after bills and savings, the rest was 'fun money' I could spend without tracking. A friend looked at my bank statement last month and said, 'You're not budgeting that, you're just letting it vanish.' She was right. I checked and found I was spending over $200 a month on small things like coffee, snacks, and app subscriptions that I never really enjoyed. I felt the money was gone anyway, so why not? I changed it up. Now, I give that $200 a name and a job before the month starts, like 'dinner out' or 'new running shoes.' It feels like planned spending, not a leak. Has anyone else switched from a vague leftover fund to planned categories and seen a difference?

It's like you stopped paying a stupid tax every month...

Ugh, I gotta disagree. Naming every dollar sounds like a huge pain. I mean, tracking a coffee or a random app subscription? That's mental energy I don't have. Sometimes that "stupid tax" is just buying a little convenience or fun. If I budget too hard, I just end up rebelling and spending more later anyway. Maybe it's better to just have a general idea and not sweat the small stuff.
