Debate: Should you track every dollar or just check your account once a week?

Started tracking every cent 3 years ago and got obsessed, but my brother in Denver says he just glances at his balance every Friday and saves more. Which side actually works long term for people here?

Your brother saying he "saves more" by not tracking is a bit misleading. The thing is, he's probably just spending less on random stuff without realizing it, not actually saving more money. I've seen this a lot with my buddies - they think they're saving because they aren't checking every day, but then a big purchase sneaks up on them and wipes out their account. Tracking every dollar helped me catch the $5 coffees and small automatic subscriptions that were bleeding me dry without noticing. Your brother might be doing fine now, but one surprise bill could throw his whole month off if he isn't watching where his money goes every week. The real trick is finding a balance where you check the flow without getting obsessed, like once a week is good but actually writing down what you spent that week makes a huge difference.

$5 coffees really aren't that serious though.
