Is paying off my smallest debt first actually smarter than the big one?

I saw a post from someone who paid off a $400 credit card before tackling a $12k student loan, and they called it a win, but the interest math says they lost money overall. I used to be all in on the snowball method after clearing a $300 medical bill in March, but now I'm wondering if the motivation boost is worth the extra cost. Which side do you land on, the quick emotional win or the long-term savings?

Funny enough, that $300 medical bill I cleared? Turns out the clinic sent it to collections anyway because of a billing typo. So the "win" was just extra stress.
