My truck's alternator died on a Thursday and I fixed it for $38 instead of $400
My alternator quit on me last Thursday while I was hauling a load of mulch across town. The shop quoted me $400 for parts and labor, which I did not have sitting around. So I pulled the old one off in my driveway, looked up the part number, and found a rebuilt one online for $38 with free shipping. It showed up Saturday morning, took me about an hour to swap, and the truck fired right up. I put the $362 I saved straight into my emergency fund instead of pretending it never existed. Has anyone else had a repair come in way under the quote and just felt weirdly suspicious about it?
