Switched to cash envelopes for eating out, hit $87 saved in 3 weeks
Last month I got sick of checking my card statements and seeing $40 here, $25 there at restaurants. So I started pulling out $60 in cash every Monday and putting it in a labeled envelope for food. After 3 weeks I had $87 left over that I normally would have blown, so I rolled it into my car repair fund. The trick is leaving the card at home when I go out, which hurts but works. Anyone else try the envelope method for a specific category and see numbers like that?

Tried the same thing with my coffee habit, used to drop like $5 a day without thinking. Stuck to a $20 weekly envelope and after a month I had $40 extra, which felt weirdly good considering I still got my coffee fix. The card staying home thing is the real kicker, makes you actually think before you spend.
