Hot take: That overpriced calligraphy pen isn't what makes your journal look good

I visited a coffee shop in Portland last month and saw a girl with a $3 ballpoint from a gas station making spreads that blew my mind. It's practice, not the tool, so stop pretending a $50 fountain pen is the secret ingredient. Anyone else feel like we overthink the supplies?

Is the fancy pen supposed to make my handwriting less messy, or do I need a matching $200 notebook for that too? @murray.cole you nailed it, same thing happens with people buying expensive cameras and leaving them on auto mode forever. I'll take skill over a pricetag any day, even if my ballpoint does leave ink smudges on my thumb.

It's like the guy at the gym with the $300 sneakers who can't run a mile. People get hung up on the gear because it's easier to buy than it is to put in the work. You see it everywhere, from woodworking to cooking, where someone will drop a fortune on a fancy knife or a top of the line mixer but never actually learn the basics. A good tool can help, sure, but it won't fix a bad habit or a lack of practice. I've watched a guy with a worn down chisel make better cuts than a guy with a brand new set.
